What Are Mobile Power Banks & Should You Get One?

January 9, 2014 by Saqib Leave a Comment

We can’t live without our gadgets and badly miss them when we forget them at our home. Likewise, even our gadgets can’t live without power and to power-up, we have to charge these gadgets mostly every day. In the good old days, our feature phones lasted for many days without charging, but these days, our smartphones barely last a day without charge. Power users and enthusiasts have to charge their phone twice a day but isn’t there anything that we can do in such a situation? That’s where power banks (also known as portable power bank, mobile portable charger or power bank charger) can be a lifesaver for us.

What is a Power Bank?

Think of these power banks as small bricks or slabs. They are very portable and can be carried around very easily. A power bank is simply a battery clubbed with a charger within it, but you don’t even need to know what goes within it. Once a power bank is fully charged up, they can be used to charge a smartphone, tablet, iPad, and many other devices. Power bank is for such people who simply can’t go a moment without their electronic devices and for those who are going on long journeys with no access to a wall socket.

Here is how a power bank looks like:

While power banks might seem to be a tempting deal, you shouldn’t hurry to buy one. You should look out for one which suffices your needs. For example; some power banks can simultaneously charge two devices at the same time, while some don’t even last to fully charge up an iPhone.

When buying a power bank, consider its capacity. For example, the power bank in below picture is 2800 mAh. Apart from that, also take into notice its connectors. Does it have connectors to charge your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android smartphone and tablets? Does it have Micro USB connector, Mini USB connector, Lightning connector (for Apple’s new devices)? All these points should be considered before getting a power bank. And yes, don’t forget that it should be of a reputable company and it should typically offer one year warranty. These days you can also read reviews of any power bank on ecommerce sites like Amazon, and also via a simple Google search.

Should you get a Power Bank?

That’s a hard question to answer, and it depends on your needs. If your device runs out of battery juice often, and doesn’t even last for a day then you should buy a power bank. If you travel frequently and don’t have access to wall outlet, then this power bank can be a life saver in such situations. However, note that you’ll also need to charge a power bank, and sometimes it becomes a vicious circle – you have to charge a power bank which in turn will charge your smartphone and tablets. But they can definitely offer some extra charging to your devices, instead of running out of battery juice.
