Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is here. The new Ubuntu has some features that would definitely seem enticing to some users. This release brings some major improvements, much awaited features and enhancements to Ubuntu’s unity shell.
New version of Ubuntu is released every six months, as per their release cycle. The 11.04 was a major milestone for the whole community as it brought a number of changes and a whole new experience for the desktop user. During the past six months, the developers have tried hard to fix those issues and make this OS, still better.
The new version comes with Linux kernel 3.0, with improved support for new hardware and drivers. GNOME is also upgraded to version 3.2. The new Unity interface seems more robust in Ubuntu 11.10. The Unity dashboard is now more cleaner and it is designed to integrate with Banshee audio player. It also includes a new panel for music search and playback.
So now that Ubnuntu 11.10 is released, it’s time to start thinking about the next major version: Ubuntu 12.04.
The codename for 12.04 is Precise Pangolin. This would be a long-term support release, which means that it will be supported with updates for three years on desktops and five years on servers.
Existing users can upgrade to this latest version. Here is the official guide on how to upgrade Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 11.10. Launch the update manager, check for updates and install the upgrade.
