For some people, Facebook chat is a blessing while for some, it is a curse. Some people don’t like to get disturbed and that’s why they disable/turn off the chat for good. Turning off the chat means that you won’t be able to chat with any of your friends on Facebook, right? Wrong; and that’s because Facebook has an option that lets you turn on chat for only some of the selected friends. Let’s take a closer look at how this can be done.
We cannot deny the fact that these days, people don’t feel the need to use messenger services like the old days when Yahoo, MSN (and later Live) Messenger, ICQ, etc were popular. These days, all we need is one thing – Facebook, for all of our social media needs as well as for chatting (text chat as well as video chat). Some might say that they don’t mind browsing Facebook, but they think that chat is a kind of annoyance, especially when you are busy or when you don’t want to talk with that person. To top it up, Facebook also displays a “seen” message which means you cannot simply ignore your friends calling. That’s why, let’s learn how to appear offline to some friends while staying online to others.
Step 1: Launch Facebook chat list by clicking on Chat from bottom right side. Click on the gear icon and then “Advanced Settings.”
Step 2: You’ll now get a pop-up menu. Click on “Turn on chat for only some friends” and then type the name of the friends whom you are comfortable to appear online. Think of this as your own whitelist. Alternatively, if you want to appear online to most of the friends, and avoid only a few ones, then select “Turn on chat for all friends except” and then select such friends. Think of this as a blacklist.
Step 3: Once you are done, click on the Save button.
That’s all you need to do. Now you will appear offline to everyone except the friends that you’ve selected. This means that from now on wards, you won’t need to talk to anyone that you’re not comfortable with. Try it out.
