[Quick Tip] How to Create a Separate URL/Link to Each Post in Tumblr

August 27, 2012 by Saqib Leave a Comment

Tumblr is an amazing microblogging platform. You can easily add different type of posts/media like text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio and video with just a click from the Tumblr Dashboard. Once you click on the option of your choice, let’s say “text”, you can then start writing the post title and body text. Once done, you just need to click on the “Create post” button.

You will observe that Tumblr will beautifully list out all posts with endless scrolling. But have you ever wondered how to get a link to a specific post to Tumblr?

Tumblr, by default won’t create a separate link for each of your post. You’ll need to explicitly enter a custom post URL and here’s how to do this.

How to Set a Custom Post URL in Tumblr

Login to your Tumblr and click on the type of post that you want to create. For example, click on “text”. Enter post title, body text, tags and notice the “Set a custom post URL”. Click on it and enter the custom URL that you wish to set for this post. You can use dashes – to connect words for example, this-is-my-example-post.

Finally, hit the “Create Post” button.

You may be wondering whether you’ll need to enter a custom URL for each and every post? No, you don’t need to do for each post and you can also automate this task. To set a URL automatically which will add a short text summary, click on the “Preferences” icon from the top right side of the screen and then click on “Customize your blog” button.

This will open “Themes” page. Scroll down to the “Advanced” option and check mark “Use descriptive URLs.” Scroll up and hit the “Save” button. That’s it, from now onwards, Tumblr will automatically create a unique URL for each and every post.

However, doing it manually means you can add SEO friendly keywords in the URL. It’s your wish whether you want to do this automatically or manually. Now you can interlink to posts in Tumblr which was not possible otherwise.
