Apple has finally released iOS 6.1, the company’s next minor update for iOS 6. Now that the final version is here, everyone can start jailbreaking their iOS 6.1 devices , the only condition is that you need to be on a pre-A5 based device.
Before proceeding forward, here are some important points that you should definitely read:
- This is a tethered jailbreak which means that you can run any third-party apps and tweaks on your iOS device, but whenever you restart your device, you will need to plug it into a computer running RedsnOw.
- This jailbreak is for only Pre-A5 devices such as iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th-generation.
- This jailbreak is NOT for latest A5 devices such as iPhone 5, iPod 5-th generation and iPad second, third and fourth generation devices.
- I would always recommend you to backup your iDevice prior to jailbreaking using iTunes. This will take a few minutes but it’s worth it.
With the above important points in mind, let’s proceed forward.
How to Jailbreak iOS 6.1 (Tutorial)
Step 1: Download iOS 6.0 firmware from here. Make sure that you select the iOS 6.0 for your device and then click on the “Download” button. The reason that we’re doing this is because RedsnOw 0.9.15b3 does not support iOS 6.1 as of yet.
Step 2: Download RedsnOw 0.9.15b3 for Mac or for Windows.
Step 3: Connect your device to the computer.
Step 4: Launch RedsnOw and then click on Extras > Select IPSW and then select your newly downloaded iOS 6.0 IPSW file. Wait for a few seconds until RedsnOw identifies your iOS 6.0 firmware.
Step 5: Go back and then from the main screen, click on the “Jailbreak” button. From the next screen, click on “Cydia” and then click Next. The jailbreak process should now start.
Step 6: When you see the Lock screen, place it into DFU mode and then simply follow the on-screen instructions.
When the jailbreak is complete, select the “Autoboot this device when it connects in DFU mode” option. Congratulations, your device is now jailbroken and you should now be able to see the Cydia icon on your jailbroken device.
Booting to your Tethered Device
If you’ve followed the above tutorial, then you have a tethered jailbreak device which means that your device needs to be booted into a jailbroken state on every reboot. To do this, connect your device to a computer running RedsnOw, go to “Extras” and then click on “Just boot.” You’ll need to do this every time you reboot your device.
An untethered jailbreak can arrive any time now. This upcoming jailbreak will work on almost newer devices. Keep checking Technostarry to know about latest jailbreak announcements.
