How to Create and Remove Addon Domains from cPanel

April 24, 2011 by Saqib Leave a Comment

Firstly the basics. What is addon domain ? Addon domain means you can add additional domains to your cPanel, and have them hosted in your Webhosting account, without purchasing any extra plan or hosting. Thus one can save money, and he needs not to purchase a different hosting plan. One can have hosted his all domains in only one hosting account. E.g. if you are already hosting a site, lets say samplename.com and you purchased another domain name e.g. newdomain.com. Now instead of purchasing a separate hosting for newdomain.com, you can just create an addon domain, and thus you can host the new domain also in the same hosting account.

This is really a good method to save some bucks and add your all domains in one account. It can also be said that addon domain means hosting multiple domains and all sharing the same cPanel. Each domain name can have different Email addresses, forwarders and FTP accounts.

How to create addon domain ?

The procedure to create addon domain is very simple. Just login to your hosting cPanel (also called as Control Panel) scroll down and the from domains section, click on Addon Domains. (Refer below screenshot)

In the next screen, fill out the required information (as soon as you enter the New Domain Name, other fields will get auto populated) and click on Add Domain. Below is a detailed explanation of each of these fields:

addon domains

  • New Domain Name: Enter your new domain name.
  • Subdomain/FTP Username: Enter your desired FTP username
  • Document root: The path. E.g. public_html/domain
  • Password: Enter your desired password. Take a look at strength field, your password should be Very Strong. As this is very important, the password should be strong.
  • Password Again: Enter your password again.

That’s done. You just created a new addon domain. Now make sure that you have changed Nameserver information in your Domain control panel. The nameserver should be something like
ns1.webhostingcompany.com
ns2.webhostingcompany.com

You need to change this nameserver by logging in to domain registrar account. If you are unsure that what your nameserver information is, then you can contact your hosting company.

How to remove addon domains ?

Just in case, if you think to change your hosting company, or you want to shut down your website, you can remove (delete) addon domain also. Login to cPanel and click on Addon Domains.

Here you will be able to see Modify Addon Domain section and all your addon domains will be listed here. Click on Remove to remove the addon domain.
