We have earlier reviewed Vonage Mobile and Viber which are VoIP applications for Android and iOS. Such applications can help users to save some bucks by calling over Wi-Fi and data. Talkatone is yet another application for your iDevice and Android that can help place unlimited free calls and texts to any phone number in US and Canada. But there’s much more to this, read on.
If you are having a smartphone then it only makes sense to use VoIP apps instead of paying for voice minutes and text messages. As we know, Google Voice already offers us to place calls from web browser and the user can purchase credit and call at super amazing rates. But the problem is that there is no such app offered by Google and therefore Talkatone uses Google’s infrastructure to offer free calls and texts over Wi-Fi and 3G/4G. You just need to enable Wi-Fi and if you are not in a Wi-Fi zone, then you can enable and use 3G or 4G to connect to the internet and use this app. This basically means that you are saving your cellular minutes.
Make Free Calls to US and Canada
This app can turn your iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone or Android tablet into a phone. The free version is ad supported but that’s the only way we can contribute to developers. After installing this app, you will be prompted to sign-in with your Google or Facebook account. If you want to use credits of Google Voice, then you will need to use your Google account to sign-in.
Upon first login to your Google account you will receive welcome email with activation/setup instruction which needs to be completed on your computer. Follow these instructions to get started.
This app has a very clean user interface. It resembles more like the default Android calling interface. The four tabs are – phone, recent, contacts and favorites. This dialpad can be used to call to any number. Just dial a number and there is no need for any further configuration.
Talkatone runs in the background so that you can get a notification once you receive a call. From that screen you can receive the call. To enable SMS support, you will need to enable “Text forwarding” in Google Voice to forward your text’s to your email address. Now you can send and receive text messages (SMS) from Talkatone.
The call quality screen offers variety of options to control call quality, so that you can configure separate settings for Wi-Fi and data connections. This way, you can set different options for example, you can set high-quality for calls placed over Wi-Fi and low-quality for calls placed over cellular network.
