Google web fonts allows a user to embed fonts to website. You can choose from hundreds of free, open-source fonts optimized for the web. These fonts are fancy and looks superb compared to the traditional fonts used in a website. Embedding web fonts using the import declaration is very easy. But did you know that you can also download and use Google web fonts on your Windows PC.
We have previously written about how to use web fonts for websites. But in this small tutorial, you’ll learn how to use these Google web fonts on your Windows PC.
Use Google Web Fonts on Windows
These fonts are open source and therefore you can freely download and use them on your local computer. Try browsing the web fonts directory and click on “Add to collection” button.
You can keep adding all the fonts that you like to your collection. You get a large choice of amazing looking fonts. After you’re done doing this, click on “Download your collection” button from the top right corner.
Click on “download the font families in your collection as a zip-file”. All the fonts that you’ve added to the collection will be downloaded to your local computer.
Now that web fonts are downloaded to your computer, its time to unzip them. After unzipping, open the folder and you’ll find font files.
Right click on a font and then click on Install to install the font. This is how you can install web fonts in your windows PC.
One more alternative method is to copy and paste the font file to this destination:
C:\Windows\Fonts (where c: is your windows system drive)
Now you can use the same fonts in applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, etc. Just in case if you want to download the entire font collection from Google web fonts, then head over to this page and you can find instructions on how to achieve this. There are separate instructions for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The entire collection is 1.3 GB and growing as new and new fonts are added regularly.
