TVs and Monitors are very important as display devices for us. We keep on staring them for hours. They need to be of good quality and in a newbie’s sense, they need to be of latest technology. Nowadays there are many marketing gimmicks used by these manufacturers. We need to be able to identify which one is best for us and which one to go for. There may be time when some people wonder the difference between LCD and LED TV’s or monitor’s. This small guide will guide you which one is better and which one to go for.
Lets first take a look at LCDs
LCDs are flat panels which uses Liquid Cristal Display technology. They have two layers of glass which are stuck together. The liquid crystals then help pass the light or they may block the light.
But the point is that crystals don’t produce their own light, it comes from series of fluorescent lamps at the back of the screen.
Now lets take a look at LEDs
LED TVs are also very much like LCDs. The only main difference between both is about their source of backlight. On LCD TV, the lamps are fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), whereas in LED TV, the light comes from the back of the screen with the help of Light Emitting Diodes (LED). And thus the name, LED is rightly given.
LEDs are newer technology, and they are launched in 2009. The LED technology is more energy efficient, that means it consumes less electricity than LCD TVs.
We can expect this new LED technology to mature more and more. These lighting techniques influence the display quality very much. Therefore its an important aspect when buying your new display device. There are three types of LED backlighting techniques. They are:
- RGB dynamic LEDs
- Edge-LEDs
- Full Array LEDs
But let’s not delve deeper into this. You may also like to check out LED backlight wiki.
Some other points to consider:
These both are different in some more aspects also. Such as their contrast ratio, viewing angles, color accuracy, wall mountable or not, etc. Ofcourse these should not be your final deciding factors. One should choose a display device wisely. Because this is something which we don’t keep on purchasing at regular intervals. If we look at the contrast ratio of LEDs, then mostly they are better in this aspect in comparison to LCDs.
So finally, which one to go for ? LED versus LCD monitors, is it a tough choice ?
If you are thinking and confused between both of these terms, then its recommended to go for LED TVs. Some points in favor of LED TVs
- LCD uses Mercury in manufacturing process and this mercury has very bad effect on environment. Whereas in the manufacturing process of LEDs, mercury is not used. We can say that LEDs are environmental friendly.
- LEDs consume less power compared to LCDs. It can be also said that LED can save you approx 30 % more than the LCD. Thus saving some more bucks in using it.
- LEDs have much better contrast ratio, compared to LCDs. Therefore for graphic intensive applications and gaming, LED are best.
- LEDs are softer on eyes. Those people who use their Computer or TV much, then they should buy LED.
Pricing:
Nowadays there’s not much difference in the pricing of LCD and LED monitors. It’s just that LED costs some bucks more than LCDs.
Hope this LCD and LED comparison will help you to be better equipped with the information. Yes these both are different technologies but now you know which is better, and which suits your needs.

I had referred multiple website for this technology different but i really understood from this article, infact much clear now to choose as per my consideration. Pricing is not much different hence i also suggest people to chose LED because of environment friendly technology, which is very important to-day.

Nice article, however it would have been nice if you could have added your comments on using LED TV as a computer monitor and how different are computer monitors from LED/LCD TV’s
Look forward to a new or follow up article on this.

LED TVs are the best option as its quality of video reproduction. But its price is bit heavy as its a new technology. Its better to wait for some more time to get the price reduced.
