Wikipedia – World’s most popular and free encyclopedia now lets you create an eBook using Wikipedia articles, all thanks to its book creator tool that’s super easy to use. Some of you may pose a question on why should you create an eBook when you can always browse Wikipedia online? The answer is simple – because internet may not be available at all places and once the eBook is created, you can always carry it around in your favorite device like mobile phones, tablets and e-book readers. The best part is that you can add as many pages as you want to this eBook, and there’s no need to use any external tool/extension as Wikipedia itself offers this functionality. Let’s take a closer look at how this works.
Visit Wikipedia and from the left sidebar, expand the Print/export option. Once its expanded, you can see additional options. Click on Create a book option from there.
Once done, you can see the Book creator page. Click on the green Start book creator page to start creating your book.
You can now add Wikipedia articles to your book in two ways. The first method to add pages to your book is by clicking on the Add this page to your book option that is displayed at the top of each Wikipedia page. The second option becomes available when you hover your mouse over a Wikipedia link. Wait for a second and you’ll see an option to add linked wiki page to your book option. Click on this link to add page directly, without opening that link.
When you’ve added a page to your book and if you want to remove it, then click on the “Remove this page from your book” option. Another way to remove the page is from the Show book page.
The “Suggest pages” option will generate suggestions based on your selected articles. But it may take some seconds before the suggestions are displayed on the screen. When the suggestions are displayed, you can quickly add them by clicking on the + button (or the link).
Keep on adding as many pages as you like. Once done, click on the Show book option. From here, you can add a title, subtitle, create a chapter (and also order it), sort pages alphabetically and delete a page. To sort pages, you just need to drag and drop the pages.
You can download the eBook in four formats namely, PDF, OpenDocument, OpenZIM and EPUB. Wikipedia has added the support for epub format recently and it is available only for the English Wikipedia website. This is the best format that is supported on many mobile devices, tablets (like iPad) and eBook readers.
Once all the options are selected, click on the “Download” button. Wikipedia will now display progress for this process and it will take some seconds to complete it. Once completed, you need to click on the “Download the file” link to download your Wikipedia generated book.
Try out this Book creator tool and create your eBook for once and enjoy it on any of your devices, no active internet connection needed.
