Google Chromebooks now Available on Amazon

June 9, 2011 by Saqib 2 Comments

Google Chromebooks are now available to pre order on Amazon.com. The impatient ones can pre order it right now and can get delivery when these netbooks arrive. It would be somewhat confusing whether to call them as netbooks or notebooks, but for now, since they are running Intel’s Atom processor, we can call them as netbooks. But ofcourse the next generation netbooks, because they are powerful and sports Intel Atom dual-core N570 processor and have 12.1-inch LED-backlit display (unlike the older netbooks which had 10.1″ screen size). Check out the technical specifications of Google Chromebook.

These Chromebooks are optimized for web, have impressive battery life, boots in 8 seconds, and apps, documents and settings are stored in cloud. But only time will tell if data stored in cloud is safe and reliable. What if the cloud itself is down, then will we be able to access our precious data on that particular time ? Will old hardware peripherals work with them ? What if the internet connection gets disconnected and one needs to access the data urgently ? There are some questions which are worth thinking and only after some time will we get answer to these questions.

Pricing of Google Chromebooks:

Now coming to the pricing part. There are many models, but below are the prices of some models of Chromebooks:

  • Acer Cromia 11.6″ Chromebook – Price $379.99
  • Samsung Series 5 Wi-Fi Chromebook – Price $429.99 (Both models, Arctic White and Titan Silver)
  • Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook – Price $499.99
  • Acer Cromia Chromebook (3G) – Price $449.99
  • Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook – Price $499.99

(prices are in USD)

There’s one question though, is it affordable ? Well, it depends on your definition of affordability. You can find many other netbooks around $250, which are affordable, and value for money, and they can do anything that these Chromebooks can do, except storing all data on the cloud and its related services (and they also take more time to boot, unlike Chomebooks that boot under 8 seconds).

And here comes the final question, are you going to get a Chromebook ? Do comment below and share your thoughts.

After going through your article, I was thinking that I am in no way ready for the Chromebook. After a few hours passed, I convinced myself, again, to buy one when they are available. I’ll keep my Windows laptop around for good measure.

I won’t. Instead I would get a Netbook, through which I can have access to my data in all situations.
