Mute Firefox Browser with a Single Click or Shortcut Key

February 18, 2012 by Saqib Leave a Comment

When browsing online, some websites automatically start playing music. These types of sites are really annoying to some users as speakers may be on high volume and they’re not aware that any music or sound is going to be played when visiting that site. In such a case you have to either turn off the speaker or mute the sound by clicking on that volume button. But have you ever felt the need to just mute the Firefox web browser?

May be you’re on a call and you want to mute the sound coming from the browser. Also some flash websites can make really irritating sounds when browsing them. But there’s a solution and you can mute all the sounds/music coming from Firefox.

Mute/Stop Sound from Firefox

Muter is a Firefox extension that helps you to mute the browser temporarily. Muter adds a button that’s visible in browser’s status bar. A left click on this button and this extension will mute all the sound from the browser instantly. And left-click on this button again to unmute it (turn the sound on).

This is by far the simplest and easiest way to mute Firefox browser. The green icon represents that sound is currently enabled and a black colored icon represents that sound has been disabled in the browser. Right-click on this muter icon and you’ll get additional settings options.

From here, you can change skins of this muter icon. Next, click on “muter settings” to open settings related to this extension. From here it is possible to switch between different button styles – with menu or without menu. Select the option of your choice.

From the “custom” tab you can even change the normal status icon and mute status icon by selecting other image of your choice. You can browse and select any image you wish to set as normal or mute status icon image. Click on “reset icon” button if you want to reset default icons. From “miscellaneous” tab you can change the shortcut keys to mute or unmute. The default shortcut key is Ctrl+Alt+M. This is helpful when you don’t want to click on the mute icon and instead press the shortcut key.

But some of you may be wondering why not mute windows sound from system tray by clicking on the volume control button. Yes, you can mute the sound from here also but what if you want to mute only the Firefox browser and not entire windows sound. You may be playing music in your favorite music player e.g. Winamp, iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc and don’t want that music to be mute. That’s where this useful add-on can come help you, as it will only mute Firefox and not entire windows sounds.

Firefox users can download and install Muter from official extensions library.
