Disable the Start Menu from Auto Arranging your Programs by Name

February 29, 2012 by Saqib Leave a Comment

You may wish to arrange start menu by placing most used icons/programs at the top of the menu. But the problem is by default, the Start menu will automatically arrange all the installed programs in alphabetical order. Even drag and drop method won’t work with the default settings. But here’s a way to stop the Start menu from automatically arranging programs in alphabetical order.

Disable Alphabetic Sorting Of Start Menu Programs

  1. Right click on the Start orb and click on Properties.
  2. Properties dialog box will open. Click on “Customize” button from the “start menu” tab.
  3. customize start menu

  4. This should open the customize the start menu options box. Scroll down and uncheck the option “Sort all programs menu by name“. Click on OK to save the settings.
  5. sort-programs

That’s all you need to do. Now you can arrange the Start menu programs as per your wish. Just drag and drop the programs wherever you wish to place it.
