sCategory Plugin Helps You Select Category to be Used to Generate Permalink

October 9, 2011 by Saqib Leave a Comment

This post is for those who are using WordPress. There are thousands of plugins for WordPress but some plugins just standout and are much useful. It doesn’t mean that you have to keep on installing plugins and experimenting with your live site every now and then. This sCategory plugin is about permalinks. It let’s you select the category which will be used to generate the permalink.

Let’s say you are using /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure, and then you want to add the same post in two categories. But the problem here is that you won’t be able to select which category to use to generate the permalink. By default it will just use the category which is created first (old category), and then use that category for generating permalink. Now this may not be SEO friendly for some. And that’s why, here comes the useful plugin sCategory.

After installing this plugin, login to your WordPress admin, go to settings > Permalinks and enter %scategory% option in Custom Structure text field. This doesn’t mean that you cannot have post ID or post name in permalink structure. You can also use a structure like this: /%scategory%/%postname%/. This is the first and the only step to configuring this plugin. Now whenever you create or edit a post, you will be able to select Primary category. This primary category will be used to generate the permalink.

So all you need to do is to just move your mouse over a category in Categories box and then click on “Primary”. Now this category will be used to generate permalinks and also this category will appear as bold.

Just try out this useful plugin and have control over your permalinks. You may also be interested in knowing about different permalink structures in WordPress.
