As we know, the iPhone 5 comes with a bigger 4-inch display, faster processor, 4G LTE and a new battery that as per Apple, lasts longer than the iPhone 4S. The claim might be true but the actual life of battery differs according to usage. Here are some battery saving tips using which you can get the most out of your iPhone 5.
As per Apple, the iPhone 5 offers up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G, up to 8 hours of browsing on LTE, up to 10 hours on WiFi and up to 225 hours of standby time. You may have noticed that you are not exactly getting such (claimed) battery life and therefore you can try out below tips to get more juice from your device.
Lower the Screen Brightness
Normally, the screen is set to 50% brightness. To conserve battery, you can turn down the screen’s brightness. More brightness means it will consume more battery juice and therefore you can lower the brightness.
Doing this is very simple. Go to Settings and then tap on Brightness & Wallpaper. This will bring the above screen. From here, you can see that by default it is set to around 50%.
Lower down or dim the brightness from here but ensure that you can comfortably read on the screen. Also toggle OFF the Auto-Brightness from this screen which will keep your iPhone 5’s screen brightness from automatically adjusting as per the environment.
Turn off WiFi
If your phone is low on battery juice, then turn off the WiFi. This way, your phone won’t keep on trying to find and connect to any WiFi network.
To turn off WiFi, head over to Settings and tap on Wi-Fi. Now you will be taken to a menu where you can toggle WiFi to ON or OFF. Toggle your WiFi network to OFF.
Turn off 4G LTE
The iPhone 5 comes with 4G LTE also which means when you are not on 4G network, you can disable it to save battery.
To turn off 4G LTE, head over to Settings and then General. Tap on Cellular. From here, you can see the option to toggle On or OFF. Toggle it to OFF.
Turn OFF Location Services
The location service uses GPS along with WiFi hotspots and cell tower locations to determine your location. This feature is used by some applications like Maps, Compass, Facebook, Find My iPhone, Evernote, etc. But to save battery, you can temporarily disable it.
Location services can be disabled from Settings and then tap on Privacy. From here, tap on Location Services at the top. From the next page, you can toggle Location Services to OFF.
Turn OFF Push Notifications
Some people don’t like notifications and they may want to disable notifications. Push notifications are those that pop up on your home screen when an app tries to notify you about something. For example, many games enable push notifications when installed.
To disable notifications, go to Settings and then tap on Notifications. From here, you can see a list of applications which you can manually select and then disable it. You may also like to disable notifications for each applications.
Enable Airplane Mode
Airplane mode is often misunderstood and many people think that it can only be used on flight. This is not true and you can enable airplane mode whenever you want to save some battery juice. Airplane mode will disable all your data/cellular services and also turns off WiFi. This means no phone calls, no texts or no internet.
To enable/turn ON Airplane mode, go to Settings and toggle the Airplane Mode to ON.
Manually Fetch New Data
Your mail application can check for mail at regular intervals. This means it can consume more battery life. You can set it to check mails manually or even turn it OFF.
To manually fetch new data, go to Settings and then tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Scroll down and tap on Fetch New Data. From this screen, you can completely disable, or can set an interval of Push. Tap on Manually which is a great way to fetch new data only when required.
It means that you have to manually check for email by tapping on Refresh. But don’t worry, in iOS 6, Apple has made it even more easier to fetch new emails as you can just pull down the mails which will check for new emails.
Restart your iPhone 5
This trick may not work for everyone, but its better to try it out if you’re really low on battery juice. iPhone users normally don’t restart their phones for weeks or months and that’s why it’s better to restart the phone.
To restart the phone, hold the power button for some time and then Slide to Power Off. Now turn on your phone again by holding the power button.
Disable Bluetooth
Surprisingly, the Bluetooth was turned ON by default on my device. If you are not using Bluetooth, then it’s a good idea to disable/turn OFF Bluetooth.
To do this, go to Settings, tap on General and then tap on Bluetooth. Toggle it to OFF from there.
Disable Siri’s ‘Raise to Speak’ Feature
It’s a good idea to turn off Siri’s Raise to Speak feature if you don’t use it frequently. To do this, go to Settings > General > Siri and toggle it to OFF.
Close Unused Apps
When you have finished using the app, its better to close that app. If not closed, then the app will consume more resources.
To close apps, go to the home screen and double tap the home button. Hold down your finger on the app’s icon until it starts to jiggle. Now tap on the red – sign to close that particular app. Close all apps that you have used.
These tips are not just for iPhone 5, but majority of these tips can improve battery life of your iPad and iPod touch also. Try it out on your iOS device and get more battery life.
