How to Extract Text from Protected/Encypted PDF Documents

September 6, 2011 by Saqib Leave a Comment

Sometimes you may come across a protected PDF file. And what if you want to copy the text from that PDF and paste it somewhere, may be you just want to provide a reference to it on your site. But protected PDF document’s are a tough nut to crack, one cannot just select anything and press Ctrl + C. To extract text from such protected PDF’s, use a tool like Free PDF to Text Converter. This tool can be used to extract text from password protected or encrypted PDF files.

Also did I told you that you don’t even need to have PDF reader (like Foxit Reader or Adobe Reader) installed in your computer for doing this. This is a portable application and can be used to extract the text, leaving aside the images which comes in between. This can really come in handy when you want to extract only text from a particular PDF document and want to skip images. I agree that this can also be done manually but imagine a PDF which have images in every page, in this case you will need to ensure that you are selecting only the text portion and also this is a manual process and it will consume much time. Here’s where this little nifty utility comes in handy.

How to use Free PDF to Text Converter

  1. This is a portable application. After downloading, unzip it and run the application.
  2. Click on Load PDF Files button and browse and load the PDF file.

  3. Now click on Load PDF to Text for free. That’s it. In the next few seconds you will be presented with a folder where the extracted text will be saved in a text document. This text can now be copied or edited in any text or word editor of your choice.

(While testing a PDF file of 24 MB, it took just 10 seconds to extract the text from it. Impressive)

LotApps Free PDF To Text Converter is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. And as the name suggests, its a freeware.

Disclaimer: If you own (have all copyrights) for a PDF then this method will come handy. Extracting text from PDF of other person/organization, may directly result in copyright infringement, if their PDF Files are protected by Copyright laws.
