How to download any Linux distribution? Head over to the official site and download it. But there are some people who always keep on experimenting by trying out different Linux distros. For such persons, Get Linux can come in as a really handy tool.

Get Linux is an open source and portable download client with a server side library of operating systems. In short, this download client helps in downloading your favorite Linux based operating system. With this utility, one can download more than 100 Linux distributions, easily. To download, all a user needs to do is to select the Linux distribution from the list, select 32 bit or 64 bit OS and then click on “Download”.

Some may think why use this application, when they can download it from the official website. Using this application means that you’re always downloading the latest OS, and you don’t have to manually search for the ISO, there’s no need to even open a web browser. Just use Get Linux and download any flavor of Linux, as per your wish. Get Linux downloads ISO, PNG, JPG and OS.cfg (Script File).

A user can download many different operating systems like Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, PC-BSD, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva, Linux Mint, Fuduntu, CentOS, Damn Small Linux, Xubuntu, Puppy Linux, Parted Magic, Fedora and many others. Select the operating system from this list and then download it. There are also other options to know more about that particular OS, by clicking on “Distrowatch” button. Those who want to know more about that OS can hit this button and they’ll be taken to the Distrowatch website. The “YouTube” button searches for that OS on YouTube and the “Website” button takes you to the official website of that developer.

If you’re searching for Ubuntu, for example, then just press “U” to scroll down the list, which helps in finding the desired OS faster.

Newly downloaded Linux OS will be saved in the same directory where the exe file of Get Linux is stored. If you want to change this setting, then click on “settings”.

There are also additional settings like what action would you like to perform once the download is over, enable startup sound, enable download complete sound and change time out limit.

If you’re on Windows XP, then you’ll need to download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.

You can download Get Linux from below link. Instead of the installer, download the “zip” file. Unzip it and run the application. This being a portable app, you can also carry around in a USB flash drive.

The days of live CD/DVD are coming to an end. People have started using USB Flash drives for their everyday data storage needs and other purposes. We can easily download Linux live bootable CD/DVD’s from the official website of the respective Linux distribution. After downloading that ISO file, we just have to burn it into a CD/DVD. Creating a bootable CD of Linux is not that hard but things can get tough when we want to install Linux on a USB Flash Drive. The process is not so simple.

The plus point of using a USB disk is that it is small, can be carried around easily and has fail rate next to none, compared to optical media. For every Computer geek out there, they know how handy can Linux be, when Windows refuses to boot, when we want to partition the hard drive, recover valuable data, and we can do much more than this. Thus, using a flash drive to boot up a Linux distribution has many advantages. Plus you can use this flash drive in a Netbook also, which are mostly not equipped with optical drives.

Install Linux on Thumb Drive

Thankfully there are some really useful softwares that can help us to achieve this. One of them is Live USB Install. There are some more applications to do this task, but what makes Live USB Install stand out is that it can install from a variety of sources like from CD/DVD, ISO image and that’s not all, this program can also download the specified Linux distribution from the internet. You will need to pick which version of Linux you want to install and in which drive. For this, select the “Internet” option and then the “Distribution”. The selected Linux package will be automatically downloaded from the internet and then installed in your flash drive. This program not only works on Windows but also on Linux.

Live USB Install to Install Linux on Thumb Drive

From this screenshot of the program, we can say that the interface is very simple and straightforward. Follow the process in 3 main headings: “Install from”, “Select Linux Distribution” and “Install to”. You can install from either any CD/DVD drive, ISO image which you have downloaded or download a new distribution from online. In the next step, just select which distribution are you installing e.g. Ubuntu, Puppy, MeeGo, etc and then select “Version” which in most cases will be the latest version. In the third option – “Install to”, we just need to select the USB Flash drive letter, e.g. G: (Click on that “Refresh” button if your drive is not being detected).

Download LiveUSB Install (Linux on a stick).

LinuxLive USB Creator for Creating Bootable USB Stick

There’s another program that does the same task – LinuxLive USB Creator. This program creates portable, bootable and virtualized USB stick running your favorite version of Linux. Its completely free and open-source software for Windows users. This program has built-in virtualization feature that lets you run your Linux within Windows just out of the box. Virtualization right out of the box is a great feature, for those who who want to keep trying out different linux flavors, without the hassles of formatting and installing. Their website offers good amount of tutorials and guides to get started quickly.

So dump your CDs and DVDs and start using your handy flash drive to boot up your favorite Linux distribution. Try using any of these tools to create a bootable Linux USB Pen Drive.

Remember: When booting from your newly created bootable flash drive, you will need to go to BIOS and enable “Boot from USB” option. This option will let you boot from the flash drive.

Try out LinuxLive USB Creator

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is here. The new Ubuntu has some features that would definitely seem enticing to some users. This release brings some major improvements, much awaited features and enhancements to Ubuntu’s unity shell.

New version of Ubuntu is released every six months, as per their release cycle. The 11.04 was a major milestone for the whole community as it brought a number of changes and a whole new experience for the desktop user. During the past six months, the developers have tried hard to fix those issues and make this OS, still better.

The new version comes with Linux kernel 3.0, with improved support for new hardware and drivers. GNOME is also upgraded to version 3.2. The new Unity interface seems more robust in Ubuntu 11.10. The Unity dashboard is now more cleaner and it is designed to integrate with Banshee audio player. It also includes a new panel for music search and playback.

So now that Ubnuntu 11.10 is released, it’s time to start thinking about the next major version: Ubuntu 12.04.
The codename for 12.04 is Precise Pangolin. This would be a long-term support release, which means that it will be supported with updates for three years on desktops and five years on servers.

Existing users can upgrade to this latest version. Here is the official guide on how to upgrade Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 11.10. Launch the update manager, check for updates and install the upgrade.

Direct Download Link for Ubuntu 11.10

As always, Ubuntu comes in two flavors, desktop edition and server edition. Here is the direct download link:

Ubuntu One is your personal cloud. Store your digital world using the Ubuntu One App on various platforms. We all are already familiar about Dropbox, but the free account has a limit of 2 GB, whereas Ubuntu One offers 5 GB of storage space for free. Store and sync your files, photos, music, videos or just anything.

For those who are new, Ubuntu One is a cloud storage service from Canonical and is installed by default in Ubuntu OS. In Ubuntu, just launch the application from the desktop, set up a free Ubuntu One account and you’ll get 5GB of free storage. You can also buy additional storage space if needed, but for normal users 5 GB is enough. Once you’re done uploading the files, you can access your files online, on your desktop, or on your mobile, wherever you are. Cool, isn’t it.

Ubuntu One Sync App for windows is also released. So those users who are dual booting with Windows and Ubuntu will find this app as very useful. Suppose you’re using Windows at work and Ubuntu at home. Now you can store and sync files across different operating systems using this useful app.

Installing and Using Ubuntu One for Windows

After download and installing this app for windows, you’ll be greeted with a screen which will ask you to choose a folder to sync to the cloud. It’s better to create a new folder for this purpose. Click on Add a folder from this computer and select or create a new folder. All your files that are uploaded will be stored/synced here.

Now that configuration part is done, click on Go to my Ubuntu One dashboard.

All’s done. Here comes the dashboard. From here you can upload files.

To upload files, just go to your upload location which you have mentioned during configuration and copy and paste the file at that path. The file will automatically be uploaded and stored in the cloud.

There are some minus points though. And these things should definitely be improved:

There is no integration for Windows Explorer. It would have been great to right click a folder to add it to sync list.

There should be right click menu entries to copy files in Ubuntu One folder path.

The user interface doesn’t looks good. They have tried to bring Ubuntu experience in Windows, but the color scheme and user interface needs to be better. Hope this improves in future version.

The tray icon is also just too basic. It lets you to just restore or quit the application.

Apart from these small issues, the application just works. If you are using the Ubuntu operating system, you can buy music from the Ubuntu One Music Store and it’s delivered straight to your personal cloud, synced, and ready for you.

In addition to syncing with each computer, you can also login to the web interface and can upload or download files from that interface directly. Login at https://one.ubuntu.com/files/ to securely upload, download and manage your files and folders from any location through a web browser.

Ubuntu One is now available for all platforms:

Ubuntu One for Windows

Ubuntu One for Ubuntu

Ubuntu One files for Android

Ubuntu One Music for Android

Ubuntu One Music for iPhone

Download Ubuntu One

You can download this app for any platform. Just head over to the official download page of Ubuntu One. Windows version supports XP, Vista and Windows 7. If you’re on Android, then you can download the app from Android marketplace also.

With this app, you don’t just store files online, but you can also sync files across different applications. Go ahead, give this useful application a shot.

Good news for people thinking to buy a Netbook. Asus have announced that it will ship three models of its Eee PC series preloaded with Ubuntu Linux.

This deal between Canonical and Asus will really help in promoting this open source operating system. Many people still don’t know about Linux, and its features, and they still fear to use it. Some still think that a PC means Windows operating system, which is a paid operating system, and eventually costs add up while buying a Netbook. And also sometimes this cost increases the price of Netbooks. Whereas Ubuntu is open source OS and can be downloaded freely.

The new models which will ship with Ubuntu 10.10 are Eee PC 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX. However its a question why they would prefer to ship new PC’s with 10.10, when Ubuntu 11.04 has arrived. These new Eee PC’s will start shipping from June 1, 2011. Also some more models will be added to this lineup.

Chris Kenyon, VP OEM Services of Canonical said, “Many businesses are turning to Ubuntu as they look for a cost-effective, proven, and easy to use and manage operating system that can be delivered on business-quality laptops. We expect the slim form factor and great design of Eee PC, combined with the great performance delivered with Ubuntu, to produce a real performer in the marketplace.”

Asus Eee PC has a slim design, its lightweight, compact and it has upto nine hours of battery life. The Eee PC with Ubuntu is ideal for consumers and businesses. Software repository helps you in installing many free applications. Just select the software and install it.

Ubuntu already has Netbook Remix version of its Linux distribution. However those people who doesn’t know how to download and install Ubuntu, need not to fear now as it will come preloaded, also the hardware compatibility will be taken care of. There is still a large class of people who doesn’t want to bother installing any other operating system.
